Business lawyer SEO is the work of putting a firm's pages in front of the searches owners run when they need formation, contract or dispute counsel, and turning those visits into consultations.

This page is the practice-area layer of law firm marketing, which owns the foundations every firm shares.

Business law firm marketing has one twist the consumer areas do not: the buyer is an owner who often buys on referrals and reputation, and search mostly works as the place a referral gets checked before anyone calls.

How business clients buy

Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report surveyed 1,000 US adults, not business owners specifically, and found that 70% of people who recently hired a lawyer said it was easy to find and hire one, that most used a referral, and that more than half would also use the internet for their next lawyer.

The same survey found 24% said they would be unlikely to rehire the lawyer they last worked with, which is why past-client work alone leaves a gap a firm has to fill on purpose.

What that changes for marketing: the search is usually the matter, not the category. An owner types the problem, a lease clause, an operating agreement, a partner exit, far more often than "business lawyer", and the firm whose page answers the matter gets the call.

How big the business law firm marketing market is

The ABA counted 1,374,720 licensed lawyers in the US in 2025, up 1.38% from 1,355,963 in 2024, and licensed is the right caveat: that count is not the number of practicing lawyers.

Census County Business Patterns counted 165,491 law-office establishments with paid employees in 2023; 71.8% had fewer than 5 employees and 94.2% had fewer than 20, and the count misses solo lawyers with no employees and counts each office of a multi-office firm separately.

Most of your competitors are firms your size, so small business lawyer marketing is a prioritization problem: a handful of matter pages, one complete profile and a worked referral list, not a ten-channel plan.

Demand keeps arriving: the Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics counted 531,728 seasonally adjusted business applications in August 2026, down 7.8% from July 2026. Applications are EIN filings rather than finished businesses, and the bureau projects 28,501 formations within four quarters of them.

Formation and structuring

New entities follow the application count: 531,728 business applications in August 2026 (Census Bureau), each one a potential formation, operating agreement or first counsel search.

Contracts and ongoing counsel

Leases, customer terms, employment questions and retainers, searched by the clause or the document, usually on a flat or fixed fee.

Disputes and exits

Partner fights, breaches, buy-sell triggers: the most referral-driven work there is, and the coldest search arrives late.

Business lawyer SEO: win the matter, not the category

Start from the matter list: every service the firm actually signs, formation, operating and partnership agreements, contract review, commercial leases, buys and sales, shareholder and partner disputes, gets its own page.

A single "Business Law" page cannot rank for any of those searches, because it answers none of them; what a matter page needs and how firms lose rankings by cramming practices together is in law firm practice area pages.

Then the local layer: owners search with a city attached for formation and disputes, so a complete Google Business Profile and consistent citations carry the map pack, and the mechanics are in local SEO for law firms.

One more page pays for itself in this market: pricing. Owners comparison-shop fixed fees, and a page that states what a formation or a contract review costs, or at least how the firm prices, answers the question before the call.

Illustrative month: business formation and contract searches

Illustrative numbers, not a benchmark. No published benchmark exists for a law firm's whole-site conversion rate or consultation-to-signed-case rate, so replace these with your own.

Say 1,000 owners run formation, contract and dispute searches in a month; if 240 reach your matter pages, 40 request a consultation and 7 sign, the two handoffs to watch are visit to request and request to signature.

Business attorney marketing beyond search

Referrals carry this market, and the professional ones are buildable: CPAs, bankers, fractional CFOs and litigators who do not do transactions all touch the moment an owner needs counsel, and the sources, asks and tracking are in how to get referrals as a lawyer.

The rules sit close to that channel: ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(4) allows a reciprocal referral agreement with another lawyer or a nonlawyer professional only if the agreement is not exclusive and the client is told about it. State versions differ, and the rule allows the reciprocal arrangement, not paying cash for referrals.

LinkedIn is the other channel that fits: Pew Research Center counted 32% of US adults using LinkedIn in 2025. The profile setup and posting routine are in LinkedIn for lawyers.

Reviews close the loop, because a referred owner who checks the profile sees what past clients said, and the ask-and-reply mechanics sit in how to get more Google reviews.

The rules that shape the copy

ABA Model Rule 7.1 says a lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services, including a statement that omits a fact needed to keep it from being materially misleading. The ABA's August 2018 amendments left that black letter unchanged, and Comment [1] says the rule governs all communications about a lawyer's services, including advertising.

That is the Model Rule, not the law where you practice: your state's version controls, and many states keep pre-2018 restrictions in their own black letter that the Model Rule moved into its Comments.

For a business firm the surface area is the matter pages: outcome promises, speed claims and superlatives are what Rule 7.1 and its state versions test, so keep those pages to what the firm does, for whom, and on what terms.

Model Rule 1.5(a) lists whether a fee is fixed or contingent among its eight factors for judging whether a fee is reasonable; it says nothing about which pricing model is better, and your state's version controls.

Confirm the wording with your state bar's ethics counsel or an ethics lawyer before you publish.

Measure engagements, not traffic

The two handoffs in the funnel above, visit to consultation request and request to signed engagement, are where the work pays, and no published benchmark exists for either rate, so the numbers that matter are your own.

The conversion work here tests the website and landing pages, click-to-call placement, forms, scheduling and trust signals, and is judged by consultations booked and engagements signed, with read access to your intake numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Where do business law clients come from?

Clio's 2025 survey covered 1,000 US adults, not business owners specifically, and found that most people who recently hired a lawyer used a referral, and more than half said they would also use the internet for their next lawyer. For a business firm, that points to referrals as the channel to build and search as the place a referred owner checks the firm before calling.

Does SEO work for business law firms?

It works where owners search by matter: formation, contracts, leases, buy-sells and disputes all map to pages a firm can rank. No published benchmark exists for law firm conversion rates, so judge it by consultations and signed engagements in your own intake data, not by traffic.

Can a business lawyer set up a reciprocal referral agreement with a CPA?

ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(4) allows reciprocal referral agreements with another lawyer or a nonlawyer professional only if the agreement is not exclusive and the client is told about it. State versions differ, so confirm the mechanics with your state bar's ethics counsel.

Is LinkedIn worth it for a business lawyer?

As a referral and credibility channel, usually: Pew Research Center counted 32% of US adults on LinkedIn in 2025. As a consumer lead channel, no.

How much does a business lawyer cost per hour?

There is no national rate card. Model Rule 1.5(a) judges a fee by eight reasonableness factors, including whether the fee is fixed or contingent, rather than by a market rate, and the fee is what the signed agreement says. Your state's version of the rule controls.
